The original design of the Uterus Spaceship was conceived as an act of resistance and representation in response to a spacecraft design challenge in a grad school class. In an attempt to interrupt the preponderance of phallic rocket designs, I opted to celebrate the magnificent uterus form. I recall my professor stating, “I have no way to relate to this spaceship” during my feedback session in class, to which I responded, “that is why she needs to exist.”
Revisiting this form years later, on the heels of the overturning of Roe V. Wade in 2022, the form took on a new significance - an even greater need for representation and reverence for the uterus and uterus owners. The website uterusspaceship.com was developed to collect conversations, and artistic expressions about all things relating to the under-celebrated uterus: its mystery, its power, its monthly devastation, what it means to have one and use it, what it means to have one and choose not to use it, what it means to not be able to choose – and how absolutely ludicrous that is.
